What is the lymphatic system?
Your lymphatic system is a vital subsystem in the body which filters fluids to flush our toxins and waste. Have you ever had swollen lymph nodes around your neck, armpits, or groin regions? That is because your lymphatic system is working hard to break down toxic waste products and remove them from your body! A properly functioning lymphatic system will boost your immune system, decrease fatigue, improve the efficiency of vital organs, and can even improve conditions such as insomnia and depression.
The basic key to a healthy lymphatic system- movement! Unlike your circulatory system which has the heart to pump and move blood through the body, lymphatic fluid does not have a pump. The way it is moved through the body and ‘pushed’ to these toxic dump processing points known as our lymph nodes and lymphatic ducts, is through muscle contraction. As muscles contract and create movement of the body the lymph is moved. However, a stagnant life or pre-existing health conditions may cause toxins to remain in the body and create a breeding ground for disease and illness.
When should someone have a lymphatic drain done?
For healthy preventative measures, have a drain/flush done at the changing of the seasons, or approximately every three months, is a good place to start. Talk to your therapist if you are in need of flushing toxins for a specific health condition. Additionally, females who have had a partial of full mastectomy run the risk of fluid retention due to a loss of lymph nodules from their surgery. A lymphatic drain assists in moving this lymph to the body’s toxic dump sites and decreasing stagnant lymph in the body.
Is a lymphatic drain massage relaxing?
In order to stimulate lymph movement, a combination of light brushing and deep squeeze strokes are performed on the entire body. Many people comment that they feel great and relaxed after it is done!
How does one prepare for a lymphatic drain?
Hydrate! Properly hydrating before and after the drain will assist your body to release toxins efficiently. Also, discuss any recent or existing illness or medical conditions you may be dealing with so your therapist can determine if it is the best time to receive the treatment.
